A Sunday in the Life

A Sunday in the Life

Sundays have finally become the easy, unplanned family days you sorta hope for when you start having babies. It only took us seven years. We are free of the (double!) stroller and the diaper bag (suitcase filled with everything plus anvils). We have breakfast together and no one has to help anyone else eat. We each take care of our own bodily functions, too. Score! We leave the house in the morning – not too early, not too late. We have one scheduled activity, then we are free the rest of the day. Since we’re already out, we stay out, meandering where the whim (and concentrated negotiation) takes the four of us. This past Sunday, I decided to let the unusual moments knock on my door and I would take their pictures before letting them in. I didn’t seek them out. They came to me. As someone who’s used to taking charge and making things happen, standing back and letting things happen on their own is quite unfamiliar (and a bit...

Things I Learned at the Mall

Things I Learned at the Mall

It’s a good idea to visit your city’s biggest mall more than a couple times a decade if, for nothing else, than to miss out on that feeling that you’ve been missing out. I used to love to shop. In particular, I wanted to be in the center of the action, where the biggest stores with the most delectable selection were located. Don’t give me a rinky-dink suburban branch; I want the flagship store or nada. I want choices! Then, I had babies, they never stopped crying – ever, the world shuddered on its axis, and never settled down the same way again. My mall days were over. I was forced back to my former stomping ground today because, well, I stomped on my sunglasses. I cannot exist without sunglasses. I, however, do not have a sunglasses face: It takes several professionals with hundreds of styles at their fingertips to match one pair to my oddly-shaped head. Thus, no internet, no tiny store with ten styles would do. It was off to...

Jurassic Appetite

Jurassic Appetite

I’m a little scared for my future food budget. Dinner time was short tonight, so I opened the pantry and freezer. TWO boxes of mac and cheese, a WHOLE package of hot dogs and an ENTIRE bag of frozen broccoli later, plus several tangerines EACH, and the crew was finally satisfied. I feel like Dr. Ian in the car when the water starts vibrating in concentric circles. Boom. Boom. Boom. (Those of you born before 1993 will know what I’m talking about.) It. Is. Coming…   A teenage dinosaur food bill! EEEEEEK!     Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Click to share on Google+ (Opens in new window)Click to share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)Click to email this to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Like this:Like...

Bad Day

Bad Day

Sometimes, you have a bad day. A really, really, really bad day. Then, as it begins to wind to a close and you think you can probably make it through, your child decides to unpack the groceries for you and stack them like Legos. Only, groceries don’t lock together like Legos. So the big bottle of red sauce for tonight’s dinner breaks and splatters over all four kitchen walls. And the child. And into the crevices of the new cat door. And down under the door into the unfinished cement of the garage. Did you know an unfinished garage is really rough and pitted and pretty near impossible to clean without a high pressure hose of some kind? Well, it is. It’s also a good place to have a good cry. Ever have one of those days? Maybe It’s Better I Don’t Work In an Office Anymore

I’ve had my printer for four years. You’d think I could remember which way to put in the paper. — Michelle Quezada (@SandandTable) February 1, 2014   Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Click to share on Google+ (Opens in new window)Click to share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)Click to email this to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Like this:Like...

My Secret Fantasy

My Secret Fantasy

I have a fantasy about working in a bakery. photo credit: Nathan Wind as Cochese via photopin cc   The kind where you can walk up while it’s still dark and they already have trays and trays of bread and pan dulce ready for you, along with fresh coffee and ice cold milk in the little cooler. photo credit: Paco Photo via photopin cc   I have a dream of waking up so early it’s almost still night. I bundle up, get on the road, and put on my favorite podcast. As I drive, I see the lights of the city still twinkling. It’s freezing cold but the bakery soon gets steamy. photo credit: bilobicles bag via photopin cc   By daybreak, we’ve kneaded and stirred and shaped and baked until the shelves are bursting with warm, yeasty, sustaining goodies. photo credit: gabofr via photopin cc   I’m on the first morning crew, done with my shift by the time most people are getting to work. I step outside and...

Subscribe and Win!

Subscribe and Win!

I started this mad blog last year.  Here’s a link to my first post ever. Okay, as you could see from the pumpkins, it was late last year, but still.  It has taken me until TODAY to figure out how to allow people to subscribe! In honor of my nearly insurmountable (to me, I realize) achievement, I’m doing a giveaway!  Just enter your email over to the right (see it?) or on the home page to subscribe, and you are automatically entered to win a $15 gift card to Starbucks!  It’s no Cafe Moto, but…it’s pretty good. And I’ll throw in one of these things: Have you ever seen one? It’s a ceramic version of the standard Starbucks cup.  It’s a little insulated and its has a nifty slide top so you can take sips but nothing spills and your beverage stays warm.  Or cold.  And it’s just nice to hold in your hands. It took me a long time to find the perfect coffee container and this is...

A Test for Me and a Prize for You!

A Test for Me and a Prize for You!

The DNA results are in! Turns out I’m 87% Central European and not even anything remotely jazzy like Italian or Greek. It’s no wonder my kids are so, um, pale, even given their much more pigmentally-gifted father.  You can’t beat those numbers! But, it turns out I am also 13% something else.  Care to guess? Check out my picture, although I’m not sure it will help. If you guess correctly, you will win a prize: A $25 gift card to Amazon.com! Leave your guess in the comments.
