Fitness Plan, Week Four – Runner’s Low

Fitness Plan, Week Four – Runner’s Low

This is the only picture I managed to take on this morning’s run. I took it while hunched over, wheezing onto my knees.   The only good thing I can say about today’s run is that it’s over. And that, apparently, I have good blood circulation, judging by the extreme bulginess of the veins in my hand. And, the road to fitness continues! Fitness Plan, Week Three – Still Running, But Where Are We Going?

Fitness Plan, Week Three – Still Running, But Where Are We Going?

Are you new to the Fitness Plan Chronicles? Start here.   If you’re wondering if we’re still running, the answer is YES! Our goal is to go every single day. So, naturally, we don’t. We average about four days a week, and we’ve been doing it for 21 days. They say it takes 21 days to form a habit. If you skip some of those days, does it still count? What about if you skip them because you truly, honestly believe your body needs sleep more than it needs cardiovascular exertion? Like, for real?? I’m gonna say it does. Our route is the same, so the distance has not increased yet. On the other hand, we are running more of it. We started off in walk/jog mode, and now we only walk down the giant hill to warm up, and walk up the giant hill for a final cardio push, but we run the entire loop around the lake. We pass this church along the way. This Early Bird is...

Fitness Plan, Day Two – Baby, It’s Cold Outside and So Am I

Fitness Plan, Day Two – Baby, It’s Cold Outside and So Am I

All that nice warm weather yesterday appears to have been a fluke. It was COLD this morning. On the bright side, it was also sunnier. Day two of any running program always seems to be the easiest for me. I was able to do a lot more running today. As for Day Three, I anticipate entering the gates of hell on hands and knees tomorrow, if history repeats itself. Day Three is when I always start to question the wisdom of not being on the couch, under a blanket, a steaming cup of coffee in one hand and the remote in the other. (Not that my busy children allow that sort of scene, but this is the sort of fantasy that runs through my head as I’m cramping and wheezing along).                           After our run, which went considerably faster today due to all the actual running, as opposed to walking. We also stretched and did ten seconds...

Fitness Plan, Day One – The Snooze Cruise

Fitness Plan, Day One – The Snooze Cruise

Things I like about getting up at 5:45 am to exercise: 1) Not having to put on sunscreen. 2) Not having to wear a hat. 3) Getting a jumpstart on the day. 4) Getting it bloody-well over with. Things I don’t like about getting up at 5:45 am to exercise: 1) Getting up at 5:45 am.   Well, we did it. 5:45 came around and after only one alarm clock snooze, we were up! If you knew anything about our daily debate about whether snoozing increases or decreases your alertness throughout the day, you would know that in itself is an achievement. The baby wasn’t bothering with any snoozing business. He transferred, still asleep, into the stroller.   Within a minute, our older boy was alert and chanting a morning song about going bumpity-bump in his stroller and was fairly over the moon about the breakfast bars and milk we had prepared for him. This was high adventure.   We walked, we ran, and we stretched. (Note that taking...

It’s All Good – Avocado Toast

It’s All Good – Avocado Toast

Going on vacation is a wonderful thing. You eat and drink and take a delicious, restorative break from your responsibilities. You’re so refreshed that, somewhere on your long ride home, you get the idea that when you return you’re going to totally change your life from the inside out and start living clean. Clean eating, clean house, even an exercise program starting at 5:45 am! Your spouse escalates this mania and soon you’re both making lists with milestones and numbers and schedules. To aid you in your mad plans, you pick up a book that claims it’s possible to maximize both health and flavor in the same dishes. For me, there is no point to health if there is no flavor, so this little adventure might even be sustainable past a day and a half. I watched a series on PBS a few years ago called Spain: On the Road Again. It combined some of my favorite things: traveling, cooking outdoors, Mediterranean food, and chefs Mark Bittman and Mario Batali....

The Baby Steps of an Emerging Athlete

The Baby Steps of an Emerging Athlete

I am of the perspective that you are what you are right now. Not what you were, or were not, even twelve seconds ago. That means that if you want to be a healthy, exercising, positive-thinking, flaxseed-eating human being, then decide you are, and go forth as such. Last week (or was it last month?), Cute Banker and I began jogging. Again. It had been a teeny little while since I had engaged in such ambitious activity. Cute Banker has been running off and on, forever. The last time I put on a pair of athletic shoes for the purpose of athletics was the week before I found out my second baby was on the way. I had just begun a tennis class and I felt uneasy with all that pounding while gestating a tiny human. I know it can be medically safe and lots of healthy, educated people play tennis, and more, right up till delivery. It was just my own personal feeling that I did not want to...
